Vienna (OTS) – Wien Energie puts the 30th citizens’ solar power plant into operation at the Wiener Linien bus garage in Leopoldau and starts with the first sale of share packages. In this phase, Wiener Linien customers have the exclusive opportunity to become part of this solar power plant. In the second, open sales phase from May 2, 2024, anyone interested can purchase up to five sun packages. Users not only protect the climate by supporting the solar power plant by purchasing share packages, but also benefit financially. The buyers receive their original investment amount back in the form of a voucher and also receive a variable additional remuneration. The more hours of sunshine per year, the higher the additional compensation. The advantage combination: The vouchers can be redeemed against electricity bills from Wien Energie Vertriebs as well as from WienMobil Rad, the bike sharing offer from Wiener Linien. This offer is valid while stocks last.

“Since 2019, Wiener Linien has been working together with Wien Energie as part of the City of Vienna’s photovoltaic offensive to make the public transport infrastructure more environmentally friendly. Twelve photovoltaic systems are currently installed on the roofs of the Wiener Linien buildings. These systems generate as much solar power as 1,700 two-person households use in a year. And the next systems are already being planned: by the end of 2024 we want to install photovoltaic systems with a total output of more than 5 megawatts and thus use solar power on additional public transport areas,” seeo Gudrun Senk, technical manager at Wiener Linien.

The first sun packages are now available in the first sales phase. This right to purchase applies to customers of Wiener Linien. Return and advantage combination of the sun package
A sun package costs 250 euros and also includes a variable additional payment. Depending on the number of annual hours of sunshine that shine on the photovoltaic modules of the community solar power plant, this return can increase further. Wien Energie guarantees an annual minimum yield of 52.80 euros per solar package within the five-year term. The energy production (in kWh) of the system can be displayed and tracked live on a dashboard in the customer portal meine.wienenergie.at.
Advantage combination: To redeem the voucher, customers can choose between two voucher forms each year: the WienMobil bike voucher, which can be redeemed for the Wiener Linien bike sharing offer in the nextbike app, or the energy voucher, which can be used for an electricity bill from Wien Energie Vertriebs . The vouchers are not personalized and can also be given as a gift.
Twelve years of citizen power plants: participation as a model for success
For more than a decade, Wien Energie has been committed to citizen participation in renewable energies. In 2012, the first community-owned solar power plant went into operation in the Danube city. The solar packages were sold out within a few hours. Since then, the success of the model has continued unbroken: To date, 12,200 Viennese have participated in regional green electricity production with tens of thousands of share packages and invested over 40 million euros in a climate-friendly way. In addition to the 30 community solar power plants, climate protectors have also been able to participate in four wind turbines in the past.
