Journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Mehrun Rooney were brutally murdered 12 years ago. They were buried in the capital’s Azimpur graveyard. Their only child Mahi Sarwar Megh visited the grave on Sunday (February 11) around 11 am along with her uncle.

Mahi Sarwar Megh told reporters after the grave visit, ‘We live in a free country. Everyone should have natural freedom. My parents were murdered while doing something independent.’

Megh was five-and-a-half years old when Sagar Sarwar and Mehrun Rooney were murdered. Megh, who lost her parents before realizing anything, is now 17 years old. Only the image of parents floats in the eyes of this teenager.

Megh, who holds the ideals of his parents, is currently studying at this level in a private educational institution in the capital. Clouds are not behind in any part. This time he has designed the jersey of Dhaka, the team of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

When asked, Megh told Bangla Tribune, ‘I am known to everyone because of the incident of my parents since childhood. Everyone loves me a lot. But I don’t want to grow up with any extra benefits. I want to grow in my identity by doing something myself. I want to move forward by keeping the ideals of my parents.’

Megh also said, ‘I heard everyone say about my parents, they were very good, they used to do good work. We live in a free country. Everyone should have natural freedom. My parents may have been victims of this murder while doing something independent. Someone has done this.’

At that time Megh’s uncle Nowsher said, ‘We have been seeking justice for 12 years. It is disappointing to hear the drama that is happening while investigating the incident or the kind of comments that are received from high-ranking officials in charge of the government. Who wants justice! Still we live in this country. We also have the right to justice. As long as we are alive, we will seek justice for my sister’s murder, justice for the murder of Megh’s parents.’

On February 11, 2012, journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Mehrun Rooney were brutally murdered at their residence in West Rajabazar of the capital. An era has passed since the case was filed, but the investigation report has not yet been submitted. Those involved in the investigation are not able to say when the report of the case will be submitted.

So far, various investigation agencies have taken time for submitting the investigation report 105 times. The case has passed through the hands of the Thana Police, Detective Police and is currently in the hands of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

However, although there is a provision in the criminal procedure code to complete the investigation of a case within 120 working days, it is not mandatory, lawyers think that the investigation agencies are taking this opportunity.

The latest date for submitting the investigation report in the case was January 23. But even on that day, the investigation agency could not submit the RAB report. For this, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin set the next date for submitting the report on February 27.
