Prodeco Group invests more than 500 million pesos in the development of a productive beekeeping project that will benefit 73 families in the La Victoria de San Isidro district, in La Jagua de Ibirico, with the installation of 730 hives and the recovery of more than two thousand hectares of strategic ecosystems in the middle and upper zone of the Tucuy and Sororia rivers.

This project, which is carried out through an agreement with the Cesar Development and Peace Corporation – Sustainable Colombia Fund, seeks to promote the sustainable development of the territory through a fair and equitable relationship between the environmental, the social and the productive.

Raul Roys, Social Affairs Manager of Grupo Prodeco assures, “We invest in the development of these productive projects because we are committed to the economic diversification of Cesar, we want the communities in our area of influence to prepare and have more opportunities for a sustainable future. ”.

In search of creating sustainable productive opportunities, Grupo Prodeco promoted beekeeping production in La Victoria de San Isidro, helping different associations to obtain technical training in this source of income generation and employment for this community of La Jagua de Ibirico. There are two associations that are leading the beekeeping production project: Unión del Campo, an association that was born in 2017 thanks to a community process developed by Grupo Prodeco and that brings together peasant communities from the nine villages of the district; and Asotepros, Association of Technicians, Professionals and Producers in Pro of the Serranía del Perijá, an association consolidated since 2014 that works for the conservation of the Serranía del Perijá and the well-being of its community, through the implementation of programs, projects and agreements with regional, national and international organizations.

“We seek this to be a sustainable productive project, strengthened at an organizational level that allows generating greater income for the farmers of the villages. We hope that families can multiply their hives, we work to make this a sustainable business over time,” says Diego Areas, treasurer of Asotepros.

The Prodeco Group has allocated part of the investment to train associations in beekeeping techniques, make location improvements and acquire supplies and tools for the development of 730 hives.

Niní del Carmen Caballero, beneficiary of the Villa Clara village, said, “I am very proud because this project is a reality, today we have bees in our villages, we already have a family livelihood. We are grateful to have this support for our children, they made our dream come true.”

Beekeeping becomes an alternative source of employment and income for the communities of the La Victoria district, thanks to the production and marketing of products such as honey, royal jelly, propolis, wax and pollen; and at the same time, an opportunity to continue protecting the biodiversity of the area, with bees being a great stabilizer of the ecosystem of the Serranía del Perijá.
