Mashiur Rahman and Abul Kalam are seeing the light in the cornea of the eye donated by the brave freedom fighter Shivnarayan Das, who designed the first national flag of Bangladesh. They are very happy to have their eyes back.
Shivnarayan Das passed away on April 19 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). After his death, BSMMU and Thanthi National Eye Donation Society collected corneas from his eyes and transplanted them into the eyes of two people named Mashiur Rahman of Rangpur and Abul Kalam of Chandpur. As a result, two blind people regained their sight.

At this time, BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Dean Md. Nurul Haque said that people of the country have superstitions about donating corneas. People think that the whole eye will be removed, the appearance will be distorted, which the relatives cannot accept. But that is not the case. The appearance is not distorted to collect the cornea of the eye. The cornea was collected in just 10 minutes. But people are slowly getting motivated now.
The vice-chancellor said, ‘Shivnarayan Das has donated the cornea. His body has also been donated. I transplanted the cornea of one eye to the eye of Mashiur Rahman of Chandpur. The cornea of the other eye was transplanted into the eye of Abul Kalam of Rangpur.’
BSMMU doctor Rajashree Das collected the cornea from the donated eye and transplanted it. In the press conference, he said, Shivnarayaan gave the country a red-green flag. After his death, he donated his body and eyes. There is greatness in posthumous eye donation. He died on April 19. His cornea was collected on 19 April. The next day on April 20th we transplanted both corneas. The cornea must be collected within 6 hours of death. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to harvest the cornea.
Moshiur Rahman said after regaining his eyesight, he can see better than before. I had eye problems since birth. Thanks to the family of Shivnarayan Das. It feels good to have improved eyesight. I will work for the country and the people of the country when my eyesight is fully restored.
Abul Kalam, who received cornea, said, I could not see in my left eye since childhood. Now I can see after corneal transplant. I feel very good. There were various eye problems before the operation. not now I have had an operation at Thanthi Eye Hospital.
Geetshree Chowdhury, wife of Shivnarayan Das said, it is our duty to fulfill his (Shivnarayan Das) last wish after death. Although my relatives could not accept it. They thought they might have donated the body for money. But no, he wholeheartedly believed that the body would turn to dust after death…. Our son and I also want to donate the body. Having lost my husband of 53 years, I am speechless. He has worked for the welfare of the country all his life.
Arnab Aditya Das, son of Shivnarayan Das, said, ‘My father will live among people. In the cornea of his eye two see the light, of them the father will live.’
