“New Democracy and Kyriakos Mitsotakis are consciously paralyzing the functioning of our country and tarnishing its image irreparably” emphasizes K. Arvanitis

For another “condemnation of the Mitsotakis government for the forfeiture of the Rule of Law”, which bears her signature, speaks the MEP of SYRIZA – PS/The Left, Kostas Arvanitisregarding the report – catapult of the European Parliament.

As the MEP and member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Internal Affairs (LIBE) points out, “the practices of Mitsotakis and ND put Greece in the same frame as Hungary, Poland and Romania, with the report capturing the serious concerns of the European Parliament for functioning of justice, corruption, insufficient protection of the independence of supervisory authorities».

And he underlines, among other things, that: “New Democracy and Kyriakos Mitsotakis they consciously paralyze the functioning of our country and irreparably tarnish its image. We in SY.RIZ.A.-PS will continue the fight for a Greece that respects the Rule of Law, the fundamental principles of the Union and Human Rights, a Greece-member of Democratic Europe”.

It is recalled that on the day of the black anniversary of the one year since the crime in Tempe, the European Parliament approved with 374 votes in favor, 113 votes against and 45 abstained from the report of the Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE), in which special mention is made, among other things, of the issue of press independence and surveillance.

The report as approved by the plenary session of the E/K:

The statement of Kostas Arvanitis in detail

On the day of the one-year anniversary of the crime in Tempe, the European Parliament approved with 374 votes in favor, 113 votes against and 45 abstentions the report of the LIBE committee – whose rapporteur was Sophie in ‘t Veld – with comments on the report of the Commission for the observance of the rules of the rule of law in the 27 EU member states.

An exhibition which unfortunately put our country at the center, confirming once again the collapse of the Rule of Law that the Mitsotakis government and the systemic media are constantly trying to cover up. Although the EPP tried to soften with amendments the worst impressions of the actions of the New Democracy government, the European Parliament has now realized the reality: Mitsotakis and Rule of Law – parallel lives.

The practices of Mitsotakis and ND put Greece in the same frame as Hungary, Poland and Romania, with the report reflecting the very serious concerns of the European Parliament about the functioning of justice, corruption, insufficient protection of the independence of supervisory authorities.

Special mention is made of the issue of press independence, with the report denouncing arbitrary surveillance, impunity or crimes against journalists, strategic lawsuits to discourage public participation, lack of media independence and pluralism, and of course the Karaivaz murder and the impunity of those responsible.

The report does not miss the reference to the Pegasus spyware. The European Parliament condemns the monitoring of journalists and political figures and the involvement of the government in the investigation of the case, as for example by directly interfering with the functioning of the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The report also highlights the escalation of police violence in Greece, cases of discriminatory treatment by the police, disproportionate use of force against protesters and the deaths by police fire of three young Roma in Greece.

New Democracy and Kyriakos Mitsotakis are consciously paralyzing the functioning of our country and irreparably tarnishing its image.

We in SY.RIZ.A.-PS will continue the fight for a Greece that respects the Rule of Law, the fundamental principles of the Union and Human Rights, a Greece-member of Democratic Europe.
