Tehran will change its nuclear policy if Iran’s existence is threatened by Israel’s threat, Kamal Kharrajhi, an adviser to the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said. In a report on Thursday (May 9) by Iran’s Student News Network, Kharraji warned that Iran could develop nuclear weapons. Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported this news.
Kharraji said, we have no decision to make nuclear bomb. But if Iran’s existence is threatened, we will have no choice but to change military doctrine.
Such comments have raised questions about Iran’s long-standing claims that it is pursuing a peaceful nuclear program.
Tehran has always said it has no plans to acquire nuclear weapons. Western governments have been suspecting that Iran has come very close to developing a nuclear bomb in the name of its nuclear program.
On April 13, Iran attacked Israel with more than three hundred drones and missiles. Tehran said the attack was in response to a suspected Israeli attack on its embassy compound in Damascus on April 1. Israel has threatened to retaliate against the attack. Although Israel has not directly attacked Iran so far. But operations in Gaza have intensified. Especially in the city of Rafah, the Israeli forces are carrying out operations according to the plan.
Khamenei said in 2019 that building and stockpiling nuclear bombs is wrong. It is forbidden to use it. He banned the development of nuclear weapons on religious orders.
But in 2022, the same adviser said Iran was technically capable of developing a nuclear bomb but had not yet decided whether to build one.
But in 2021, the then intelligence minister of Iran said, Western countries are applying pressure to push Iran towards nuclear weapons.
The deal is aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. According to the agreement, Iran will not be able to stockpile more than 3.67 percent of uranium.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran is enriching up to 60 percent pure uranium. About 90 percent of this uranium is weapons-enriched enough to make two nuclear weapons.
