India rejects Chinese naming of around 30 places in India’s northeastern Himalayan state of Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian authorities made this announcement on Tuesday (March 2). Calling such a move by China as ‘senseless’, the country reaffirmed that the border province is an ‘integral’ part of India. British news agency Reuters reported this news.

Arunachal Pradesh is known as Zhangnan in China. Chinese authorities claim it is a part of southern Tibet. However, India has repeatedly rejected such claims of the country. Last year, China similarly raised tensions by Chineseizing the names of 11 places in the state.

India and China are two neighboring countries with nuclear weapons. In December 2022, troops of both the countries engaged in a minor skirmish along their disputed border in the state. Later, after extensive military and diplomatic negotiations, border tensions eased.

In a statement on Saturday, China said it had changed the names of about 30 places in southern Tibet “in accordance with the National Assembly’s rules on the management of place names”.

Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaswal said on Tuesday, ‘The imputed names cannot change the reality. Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be an integral part of India.’

Earlier, Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told reporters on Monday, ‘Changing the name will do nothing’.

He said, ‘If I change the name of your house, will it become my house?’
