Great Britain’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Fergus Auld, described Azerbaijan as an undiscovered treasure in his country.
Publika.az Report reports that he spoke about this in an interview with ASAN Radio.
Emphasizing that he considers Azerbaijan a unique country with beautiful people and mountains, the ambassador added that living in Ganja for 6 weeks before living in Baku helped him a lot to get to know Azerbaijani life and culture: “Many people in Britain do not know much about Azerbaijan. But the Formula 1 races helped some people to find Azerbaijan on the maps. Recently, a British historian made a very popular television program about Azerbaijan. This introduced Azerbaijan to many people. They say they want to come and see this place with their own eyes.”
On his way to Great Britain, F. Auld also talked about the gifts he brought from Azerbaijan: “I brought a carpet, homemade baklava and wine from Goychay. I love to taste different foods from all over Azerbaijan. I love Lankaran’s pickled kebab. But I also like to eat fresh cream and honey with tandir bread in Ganja, and I also like Shaki piti. Actually, I have to be very careful about food in Azerbaijan, otherwise I will get fat very quickly (laughs).”
The diplomat also said that he did not have time to scratch his head due to his workload: “If I have time on the weekend, I like to leave Baku for fresh air and explore other parts of the country. I love wearing a kilt, the Scottish national dress, to events. Makes me feel a bit like William Wallace in Braveheart. The kilt is great for dancing, so I’ll have to wear it to the next big Azerbaijani wedding.”
F. Auld talked about his visit to the liberated territories and not going to Shusha until now: “I have been to Gubadli, Fuzuli, Zangilan and Aghdam so far. I haven’t been to Shusha yet, I hope one day if they invite me, I will go. I think that there is a special bond between Azerbaijan and Great Britain, wherever I go, they welcome me warmly. It shows the relationships between people, governments and business entities. I hope that we will see that Azerbaijan and Britain will stand side by side at every important step.”
