A huge shipment of cocaine destined for Belgium was intercepted in Peru this week, totaling 7.2 tons. The drugs were hidden in a load of wooden tiles. A shipment of drugs destined for our country was also intercepted in Brazil this week.
The drug seizure in Peru dates from earlier this week and was linked to the roll-up of a drug organization earlier in neighboring Bolivia, local media report. A shipment of wooden tiles from Bolivia was examined by police and customs before they were ultimately shipped from the port of Callao to Antwerp. According to Peruvian customs, the cargo was searched because the exporter had previously been linked to drugs and because wooden tiles are not shipped frequently. A total of 7.2 tons of cocaine was found between the wooden tiles.
The drug seizures coincide with the visit of a European delegation to South America, including Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA) and national drugs commissioner Ine Van Wymersch. The delegation arrived just this weekend in the Peruvian capital Lima, near the port of Callao.

Just this week, the Brazilian federal police also announced that a shipment of cocaine for the port of Antwerp was intercepted in the port of Itapoá. It concerned 582 kilograms of coke in a deck cargo of chemicals that would be shipped via Morocco to Antwerp.
