SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The German Embassy in Cuba, through a cultural conservation program, will digitize the work of Cuban cartoonist Juan Padrón and allow access to the artist’s material through an online platform.
As Silvia Padrón, the artist’s daughter, explained to the EFE agency, the complete work will be organized in a catalog and will later be digitized to guarantee its conservation.
“Everything is going to be done here in Cuba. The only thing that will be brought from Germany are the devices and material necessary for the process,” the Culture and Press attaché of the German consular legation in Havana, Vanessa Sánchez, told the media.
“My dad always had the pain that his work was archived as he could have, so when he passed away (in 2020) I set the goal of rescuing at least most of it, which was already here in the house,” explained the Padrón’s daughter.
The Cuban’s vast work includes unknown caricatures by the author of Elpidio Valdés. The total number has not been specified, said Silvia Padrón, who stated that she was in the initial stage of inventorying the works. “We have no idea how many documents we have here.”
The cataloging phase is scheduled to conclude in two months and the project must be completed in December of this year, as Padrón and Sánchez clarified.
Digitization will allow the creation of an online platform “where all these documents will be so that specialists and those who want to study the work of Juan Padrón can consult.”
Silvia Padrón, at the head of the initiative known as La Manigua, to promote her father’s work, is currently involved in organizing her entire personal archive.
In 2022, the Department of Development and Heritage of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) announced the digitization of the entire work filmed in 35 mm by Juan Padrón.
The Cuban caricaturist, cartoon director, cartoonist and film director Juan Padrón Blanco died on March 24, 2020 in Havana due to a lung disease.
Throughout his artistic career, Padrón won important recognitions, including eight Coral Awards from the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana. In 2004 he was awarded the National Humor Award and in 2008 he received the National Film Award.
