Above all else, the ‘mixed album’ concept, which goes beyond bands and single albums, has given the audio industry a rich history with an array of stars.
It started in 1993 under the banner of the production company SoundTech, with music director Ashiquzzaman Tulu holding hands. You guessed it, this is Tulu who formed Arc Band, whose song ‘Aye Dur Parbase Tara Gune Akashe Akashe’ is still immortalized by the audience. The fact is this, he made the song thinking about the expatriates in the country, but in reality he has now settled in Canada with his family.
But today’s topic is not Ashiquzzaman Tulu’s expatriate life, band history or an attempt to highlight the declining music industry. Rather, this report originated around a strange still that went viral on Facebook recently. Where it appears, several band stars of the 90s are standing together. He said, he took this picture for fun in a photo studio around 93. Which they have not published anywhere. However, it is now out and has gone viral. Various curiosities have been created around the film. Tulu basically broke it. He said, ‘This picture of Kimbhut Kimaka is an expression of some kind of mischief of all. At the head of Elephant Road, there was a studio on the second floor at the junction of Science Laboratory, where Altaf Bhai was the photographer, I took the picture there. In fact that day we all took a single photo to put on the album slip. After taking pictures of each and every one of them, why did they think of mischief to take a funny picture. That’s why I took this picture together. We picked it up just for fun. The picture was not taken for publication anywhere, nor did I publish it. But how it came to Facebook, I don’t know.
But why did 10 popular band stars of that time go together to do such a photo shoot? This time, the story of the new history of the band mixed album comes up in Tulu’s talk. Ashikuzzaman Tulu told the story of making the album. He said, “In 1993, I made the album ‘Stars’ as a realization of a new concept. Prior to its release, the concept was just a personal dream and was not at all feasible at the time. Because no one would have thought of creating an album with so many renowned artists and 14 brand new original songs. To be honest, even though the idea was playing around in my head, I couldn’t imagine that it was actually possible. Besides, there were no producers to invest in such a big budget album.”
However, Tulu, the ‘Ark’ warrior, made it a reality. Sultan Mahmud Babul, the leader of today’s legendary production company Soundtech, was with him in this battle. And that is possible because of another legend Feroze Sai. ‘Soundtech was just born then,’ says Smriti Tulu. The late great pop artist Feroze Sai introduced me to soundtech masters. The reason is that I will be doing the music direction for Feroze Bhai’s album and it will be released under Soundtech’s banner. Babul Bhai first approached Feroz Bhai to invest money in the album and music industry and Feroz Bhai first introduced Babul Sahib to me. Then Soundtech produced Feroze Bhai’s album as the first project. In other words, that was Soundtech’s first album, the music of which was done by me.
Based on that, the debut of the new production company was with Feroz Sai’s solo album. The music of which is directed by Ashiquzzaman Tulu. As a result Tullur developed a relationship or trust with the producer Sultan Mahmud Babul. In that context, he shared the idea of a mixed album with Sultan Mahmud Babul. The producer had a lot of money to invest then. Tulu’s idea was taken up by the producer. The work of the alum begins.

According to Tulu, after the release of the ‘Stars’ album, the tide of mixed albums started in Bangladesh. Later, many mixed albums were created and many young music directors and lyricists and album producers entered the music scene of our country. Earlier it was very difficult for a new music director to develop his talent. Because if you want to sing, you get a chance to sing one or two songs in an album. And that too on a certain artist’s album. Among them, the newcomers usually did not get a chance in the album of the big artist. As a result, the opportunity for composers to develop their talent was limited. But the start of this mixed album culture gave a new music director the opportunity to create songs for multiple star artists. As a result, it paved the way for the development of many new talents. Those albums were also loved by the audience. Because the songs of many stars were available at the same time. The producers were therefore comfortable making this mixed album. After all, a mixed album means a superhit. As a result of which everyone would be happy.”
Tulu said, due to this mixed album culture, the star artists of that time were also in a very advantageous position. In his words, ‘back then vocalists had to rely on a single album release every year or two. In the meantime, the opportunity to sing has increased due to the launch of mixed albums. It was seen that in addition to their own solo album, they are able to sing in five more mixed albums in a year. From which a lot of money could be earned. Because the payment for 5 songs in a mixed album was often more than the payment for 12 songs in a single album.’
