Selling off cooperative apartments would be a “poisoned election candy”
Vienna (OTS) – “The housing non-profit organization is an international model of success. ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer, on the other hand, is based on neoliberal models that ultimately brought social housing to the grave,” said FPÖ building spokesman NAbg. Mag. Philipp Schrangl clearly rejects the sale of social housing stock. “The ÖVP is presenting a ‘poisoned election treat’ here: Nehammer is giving away apartments that don’t belong to him and future tenants are footing the bill,” criticized Schrangl.
“If this housing policy attack is actually decided before the election, it will be the task of the coming government to also protect future tenants and to withdraw the measure immediately,” said Schrangl, announcing the FPÖ’s determined resistance in parliament.
“I hope that the housing policy debate becomes more objective again. Because one thing is clear: the ÖVP’s plans to sell off cooperative apartments are extremely dangerous for affordable housing,” said Salzburg’s FPÖ Housing Councilor Mag. Martin Zauner, MA, on the plans communicated by ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer in his “Austria Plan”.
“We need a broad, permanently affordable rental housing segment in Austria – and especially in Salzburg. Our Salzburg non-profit organizations fulfill a central task of providing public services that must not be compromised. The housing market will not become more affordable by selling off the existing affordable rental housing segment following the English model. Here I recommend that the ÖVP take a look at the history books. “We cannot want London-like conditions on the housing market in Austria,” said Schrangl and Zauner, in favor of a balanced and objective housing policy.
