Four BBC newsreaders have filed a lawsuit against the British broadcaster. The four women believe they were unfairly lost their jobs at the BBC News Channel after a “rigged” job application process.

Martine Croxall, Annita McVeigh, Karin Giannone and Kasia Madera were presenters on BBC TV channels, but they lost that role after the broadcaster’s domestic and international news channels were merged. The women had applied to become presenters on the merged news channel, but claim that the outcome of the application process was predetermined.

The women, aged between 48 and 55, also say they faced discrimination based on age and gender through the recruitment process. They also state that they received less pay than male colleagues in a similar position. BBC denies the claims and says the recruitment process was “rigorous and fair”.

BBC was previously sued by a presenter in a dispute over the pay gap between male and female presenters. The British public broadcaster lost a lawsuit in 2020 from journalist Samira Ahmed, who claimed that she received less money than male colleagues who did the same work.
