At least four dead and three injured resulted in a confrontation between inmates that occurred this Wednesday inside the Pedro Juan Caballero Regional Penitentiary, in the department of Amambay, near the border with Brazil, reported the National Police of Paraguay.

According to the authorities, there was an exchange of gunshots between alleged members of the “Rotela Clan” of Paraguay and members of the First Capital Command (PCC) of Brazil, antagonistic groups that dispute control of regional drug trafficking.

The situation could be controlled when Tactical personnel from the Special Operations Group (GEO) and Anti-Riot Group of the National Police entered the prison, with support from soldiers from the Joint Task Force (FTC), after an alert from prison agents.

In addition, volunteer firefighters did the same using fire extinguishers to put out the fires caused during the event and thus prevent the spread of the fire within the prison.

According to the police report, the confrontation had begun when the groups met in the central courtyard for a soccer match, since both were separated in different pavilions.

All of the deceased are people deprived of liberty, whose identities have already been revealed by the Public Ministry, all of them being Paraguayan nationals, while among the injured is a citizen of Brazilian nationality.

Three of the inmates who lost their lives would be members of the Rotela Clan, while one would belong to the Brazilian criminal faction PCC. The medical examiner reported that the bodies had gunshot wounds.

During the procedure, police officers seized firearms, chargers, cartridges, bladed weapons, cellular devices, alleged narcotic substance to be determined, and homemade explosive devices.

After the police intervention, the authorities of the Ministry of Justice proceeded to separate the people deprived of liberty according to their background to be transferred to other penitentiaries in the country.
