Olympiacos returns to its European duties on Thursday night, after the roughly two-month break that followed the completion of the Europa League group stage.
The Piraeus will face in the packed “G. Karaiskakis”, the Hungarian Ferentsváros (15/2, 19:45), in the first of two matches in the series, which give a ticket to the “16” of the Conference League.
The new coach of the “red and whites”, Jose Luis Mendiliber, will make his debut and yesterday he made his first statements as coach of the “red and whites”.
“I couldn’t say that I came to Olympiacos without hoping for everything. I have ambitions to win everything, the possibilities are limitless. We have come to the middle of the year, there is nothing that will be off target”, Vaskos gave the stamp of his intentions, speaking at the press conference about the match.
Thoughts on the lineup
On a competitive level, Mediliber seems to have decided on the eleven that will start against the Hungarians. Paschalakis will be the goalkeeper, Rodinei and Ortega on the right and left in the defense respectively, while Karmo and Doi will play stoppers, since Retsos is injured and Biancon is out of the European list. In the midfield, Ese and Chikinio should be considered sure, while Masouras, Fortounis and Pontense will flank El Kaabi in Olympiakos’ attack.
UEFA has appointed one of its good European whistle-blowers, the 35-year-old Swede Glenn Nyberg, as the referee of the match. He will have his compatriots Mehmet Culum and Andreas Soderqvist as assistants, while two Germans, Marco Fritz and Seren Storks, will be in the VAR.
A sold out should be considered a given as there are only a few tickets left. Their availability will continue on Thursday (15/02) from 10 am until the start of the match or until they run out from the publishing houses at “G. Karaiskakis”, but also online 24 hours a day.
