In support of Benin’s efforts in conflict prevention, the United States and Germany launched the Coastal States Stability Mechanism (M-SEC) on May 7, an initiative aimed at preventing conflicts.

For these partners of Benin, it is a question of improving stability in the coastal countries of West Africa, in accordance with the Action Program of the Government of Benin II, which emphasizes democracy, rule of law, good governance and the well-being of the population.

According to the press release received by the Editorial Office of Faces of Benin, the M-SEC will focus on the fight against instability coming from the Sahel region and will be implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Beninese Agency for Integrated Border Management (ABeGIEF). According to American and German diplomats based in Cotonou, the initiative will be coordinated with government institutions and communities to promote stability, support the provision of basic services and advance social and economic development.

It is also mentioned in this Communiqué that “ On May 7, the Ambassadors of the United States and Germany announced that the M-SEC will provide 2,000 desks to 18 public primary schools in the commune of Matéri (Atacora department). The M-SEC conducted consultations and training workshops with community members, authorities and security forces in northern Benin. M-SEC is now working with these communities to identify solutions and design interventions that will promote better collaboration and greater stability “.

It was also recalled that this donation of May 7 follows a previous delivery of equipment and furniture (worth more than 19 million FCFA) to two public primary schools with around 600 students, and a donation of equipment (worth nearly 66 million FCFA) to two police stations in communities in northern Benin affected by the extremist threat.

The United States Ambassador stationed in Cotonou expressed his gratitude and thanks to the Government of Benin, through the Minister of the Interior and Public Security Alassane SEÏDOU and the local authorities of northern Benin, for their leadership and their dedication, which has enabled the country to strengthen the security and resilience of communities. “ The United States is committed to preventing violent conflict before it begins through partnership with governments, organizations, and communities. Together, through grassroots efforts, we promote the conditions for long-term regional stability » said Brian SHUKAN.

For his part, the German Ambassador to Benin, Stefan BUCHWALD, stressed that the main objective of the M-SEC is to help the Beninese government provide services to its population and ensure its security in a manner flexible and adaptable. And ” to do this, communities and local authorities are integrated into the development of the activities that will be implemented by the M-SEC“.
