FLORIDA Florida is in the process of making balloon releases illegal in an effort to protect wildlife from litter.

Currently, releasing more than 10 balloons in 24 hours is already prohibited, but House Bill 321 would expand the ban to include all outdoor balloon releases.

As reported by IFL Science, violators over 6 years of age will be subject to a fine of up to USD 150.

The move makes Florida one of several states in the US that have restricted balloon releases, including Arizona, California, Connecticut, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Tennessee and Virginia.

Conservation groups welcomed news of the ban. Oceana, a nonprofit organization focused on ocean protection, said Florida made the right decision by banning balloon releases.

Released balloons can end up in the ocean, where they pose a threat to endangered turtles, seabirds and other marine wildlife. These animals often swallow balloons and/or equipment, which can cause death or serious injury. Balloon litter also adds to the amount of plastic in the ocean, which is a big problem for the marine environment.

Support from the Ocean Conservancy and Sea Turtle Conservancy

The Ocean Conservancy says they are excited to see this bill pass and look forward to the Governor’s signature. They have long advocated for this action to protect marine ecosystems from the harmful impacts of balloon debris.

The Sea Turtle Conservancy also expressed their gratitude to the bill’s sponsors, partner organizations, and citizens who worked hard to get it done. They urge Governor DeSantis to sign the bill to protect sea turtles and their coastal and aquatic habitats.

Florida’s ban on balloon releases is a positive step to protect wildlife and the marine environment. With this action, Florida joins several other states that have taken similar steps to reduce the negative impact of balloon litter.
