Fire at an ammunition factory in the US

A factory specializing in the production of artillery shells for the US military in Scranton (Pennsylvania) caught fire on Monday afternoon (April 15), local press reported.

The Scranton Army Ammunition Plant began emitting black smoke at 3:00 p.m. (local time). Authorities were at the scene to put out the fire.

In a statement posted on Facebook later, the factory said the fire had been extinguished and no casualties were reported. “The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. We are assessing the damage to determine possible impacts to facilities or production activities,” news agency RT quote notice. “The safety of our workforce is our primary concern, and we appreciate the swift response of rescuers.”

This facility belongs to the Joint Ammunition Command (JMC), specializing in the production of 155 mm and 105 mm artillery shells, 120 mm mortar shells… as well as many types of smoke cannons, flares…

The fire occurred in the context that the US is trying to increase the production of artillery shells to supply Ukraine.

Scranton is a community of approximately 75,000 residents in northeastern Pennsylvania. This used to be where US President Joe Biden lived. He is expected to visit this town on Tuesday (April 16).
