He did his higher education at Jagannath College. In 1961, he started working in the Rupali world as an assistant director in Udayan Chowdhury’s movie ‘Bishkanya’. The acting started with a film named ‘Naya Zindegani’. But it was not released.
ATM was first seen on screen in 1968 in Narayan Ghosh Mita’s ‘Ettuku Asha’. He appeared in the role of a newspaper seller. From that small role, this talented artist became one of the best actors in drama and cinema.

ATM Shamsuzzaman was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2015 for his outstanding contribution to the arts. In addition, he won the National Film Award six times in his life for his brilliant films. He also received a lifetime award in the same event.
