New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video is going viral on social media in which some people are trying to burn an effigy and in the meantime their own dhoti (lungi) catches fire. By sharing the video, users are claiming that these are Congress workers who set their lungi on fire while trying to burn the effigy of the Prime Minister.

Vishvas News in its investigation found that the viral claim is false. The viral video is from 2012, when student union workers in Kerala were burning the effigy of the Vice Chancellor of MG University.

Facebook user Nitish Srivastava shared the viral post on May 6, 2024 and wrote along with it, “The lungi of five Congressmen caught fire while burning the effigy of Modi in Karnataka! See how all this happened. Now Modi ji’s effigies have also started teaching a lesson to those campaigning against Modi ji, be careful, *Modi ji power.

investigation

To know the authenticity of the viral video, we searched the keyframes of the video on Google reverse images. We found this video uploaded on Asianet’s YouTube channel on July 5, 2012. According to the caption accompanying the video, this was an incident in Kerala, where KSU activists tried to burn the effigy of MG University Vice Chancellor, during which the incident took place.

On searching using the Time tool, we found a Times of India report dated 24 July 2012, which stated, ‘Students allegedly set themselves on fire while trying to burn the effigy of MG University Vice Chancellor during a protest against him. Some protesters were also injured after being hit and were admitted to the hospital. A PIL filed before the Kerala High Court regarding this incident said that a statewide ban should be imposed on burning effigies.

While searching with keywords, we came across some news which showed that similar incidents have been reported from other places in India in the past. In December 2015, the lungis of some AIADMK workers caught fire while attempting to set fire to an effigy of the DMDK chief in Chennai, the Indian Express reported. Thus, in another incident reported from Shimla, three Congress workers suffered serious burn injuries while burning an effigy of Narendra Modi in December 2015.

We spoke to Kerala-based journalist Prashanth on this matter, who confirmed that the video is from Kerala and is from 2012, when KSU activists tried to burn the effigy of MG University Vice Chancellor.

Finally, the account of the user Nitish Srivastava who shared the video with false claims was scanned. We found that the user is a resident of Haldwani and has more than 2000 friends on Facebook.
