More than double the EU average with 14.9% the percentage of Greeks aged 15-29 whose poverty imposes conditions of severe material and social deprivation

The young people aged 15-29 in Greece they are threatened by poverty with severe material and social deprivations more than the vast majority of other young people in the EU, its latest figures confirm Eurostat.

Specifically, in 2022, the rate of severe material and social deprivation among young people (aged 15-29) in the EU was 6.1%. The rate was slightly higher (6.7%) in the total population (all people living in private households).

The highest percentages of young people experiencing severe material and social deprivation in 2022 were recorded in Romania (25.4%), Bulgaria (18.6%) and Hellas (14.9%). In contrast, the rate was below 3% in 12 EU members: Slovenia, Austria, Luxembourg, Croatia, Poland, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Estonia, Malta, Cyprus, Finland and Sweden.

In 2022, the overall at-risk-of-poverty-or-social-exclusion rate (AROPE) for young people aged 15-29 was 24.5%, which was 2.9 percentage points (pp) higher than the rate for the overall population (21, 6%).

When looking at the specific components of AROPE, the at-risk-of-poverty rate among youth was 2.8 p.m. higher compared to the general population (19.3% among 15-29 year olds versus 16.5% in the general population). Similarly, the proportion of people living in households with very low work intensity was 0.4 p.m. higher among young people (8.7% vs. 8.3% for the total population).

Conversely, the proportion of people experiencing severe material and social deprivation was slightly lower among young people compared to the overall population.
