Vaccinations against shingles, HPV, pneumococci, influenza, RSV, meningococci, varicella, hepatitis and TBE should be financed by the health system in the future!

Vienna (OTS) On the occasion of European Vaccination Week, Dr. Peter Kostelka, President of the independent Austrian Pensioners Association, made the important demand that in future ALL vaccinations recommended in the Austrian vaccination plan as well as seasonally recommended vaccinations such as influenza must be FREE. ****

Currently, many recommended vaccinations such as shingles, HPV, meningococcal, varicella, pneumococcal, RSV, influenza, hepatitis and TBE are not publicly paid, or at least not for all age groups. These vaccines are often very expensive. Since the corresponding vaccinations are not public services, a private doctor’s fee will also be charged. An example: The vaccine alone for the two partial vaccinations against shingles costs between 200 and 268 euros per partial vaccination! “People who cannot afford this vaccination are left without any protection against the disease. Older people and people with previous illnesses are particularly at risk here,” emphasizes PVÖ President Dr. Peter Kostelka and adds: “Vaccination protection should not be a question of wallet!”

Zwtl.: Vaccination saves lives and relieves the burden on the health system

When it comes to expanding the state-financed vaccination program, one should under no circumstances only see the “additional costs”. Rather, it must be taken into account that – in addition to the human suffering – the treatment of an illness and its long-term consequences usually cause significantly higher costs. “The treatment of the sick person, possible (long-term) sick leave, follow-up costs due to possible long-term damage, rehabilitation, etc. – all of this is paid for by the public purse, but the ‘cheaper’ vaccination is not. The independent pensioners’ association therefore demands that ALL costs for the vaccinations recommended in the Austrian vaccination plan as well as seasonally recommended vaccinations such as influenza be covered in the future,” emphasizes the PVÖ President in conclusion.
