Palestine – The European Union welcomed the appointment of Muhammad Mustafa as the new head of the Palestinian government, explaining that the authority in Ramallah is an “important partner” for the European Union and for the future of Gaza.

This came in a statement by the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, published on Friday evening on the Union’s website.

On Friday evening, Palestinian Prime Minister-designate Muhammad Mustafa announced his acceptance of the formation of a new government, following his appointment by President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday.

The European statement stated: “We congratulate Muhammad Mustafa on his appointment as the new Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, at this critical moment of great suffering for the Palestinian people.”

He added: “The Palestinian people, more than ever, need well-managed institutions that provide much-needed services in these difficult times.”

The statement explained that the Union looks forward to continuing its cooperation with the new government, including addressing the tragic situation in Gaza, and working on major reforms towards stronger democratic institutions and governance, for the benefit of the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

He pointed out that “the Palestinian Authority was and will remain an important partner for the European Union and for the future of Gaza as well.”

The European Union affirmed that it “will continue its role as a major donor to the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian people, with the aim of promoting the building of the Palestinian state in line with the goal of the two-state solution.”

The Union also thanked former Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh for his term in office and his work to strengthen the partnership with the European Union.

Mustafa is an “independent” member of the Executive Committee of the PLO, and has held a number of positions in previous governments, in addition to heading the Palestine Investment Fund, one of the institutions of the PLO, since 2015.

Mustafa’s appointment comes in the wake of a devastating war waged by Israel on the Gaza Strip since last October 7, which has left tens of thousands of civilian casualties, most of them children and women, in addition to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction of infrastructure, which led to Tel Aviv appearing before the International Court of Justice on charges of “genocide”.
