The Dutch Public Broadcasting (NPO) is conducting an external investigation into video director Remco van Leen. The NPO reported this on Monday. Van Leen may have been involved in inappropriate behavior during his time at the then TROS, now AVOTROS, where he worked until 2014.

“The NPO strives for a safe social working environment and therefore attaches great importance to careful handling of reports about this in the past and present,” the NPO message reads. That is why “a factual investigation” is being started. “Van Leen has indicated that he does not recognize the claims, but takes every signal very seriously. He will therefore fully cooperate with this factual investigation, which will be carried out by an independent party,” the NPO said.

According to the broadcaster, both the NPO and Van Leen were aware of one previous report of inappropriate behavior during Van Leen’s period at the then TROS. “After several discussions with those involved, a thorough assessment and the making of clear cooperation agreements, there were no grounds at that time that would prevent him from properly performing his duties at the NPO,” the broadcaster says.

The NPO has not received any complaints about possible transgressive behavior by Van Leen during his period at the NPO and the investigation by the Van Rijn Commission into the working atmosphere within the NPO, the public broadcaster reports. “In consultation with the NPO, Van Leen has decided to cease his work as long as the investigation is ongoing, so as not to endanger the integrity of the investigation and the NPO,” reads the broadcaster’s statement.
