660 meters of new cycling facility – closing the gap to existing facilities – 14 new trees
Vienna (OTS) – The largest cycle path offensive in the history of the city of Vienna is in full swing! In the third year since Planning and Mobility Councilor Ulli Sima gave the go-ahead, major projects such as Hütteldorfer Straße in the 15th district, Rinnböckstraße in the 11th district and Outer Mariahilfer Straße, also in the 15th district, are on the program. But the cycling offensive also continues in the Danube city. “A 600-meter-long cycling facility will be built on the old ski jumps from July to October. It will close an important gap and will connect Hausfeldstrasse and Seestadt Aspern in the future. Of course, we will also ensure more greenery as part of the project: We are expanding the green areas and planting 14 new trees that will provide shade in the summer,” says Planning and Mobility Councilor Ulli Sima.
Important gap closure in the Danube city
With more than 200,000 residents and over 10,000 hectares, the Danube city is Vienna’s largest district. This makes it all the more important to connect the district on the northern bank of the Danube to the districts beyond the Danube and to close gaps within the district. Since 2022, the cycle path offensive has been underway in the 22nd district, which covers a total of 14 km in the main cycle path network alone, with projects such as the extra-wide two-way cycle path on Wagramer Straße as part of Vienna’s 1st mega cycle highway from Kagraner Platz to the city, Donaustadt-Straße and Erzherzog-Karl-Straße. The focus of the offensive is also on closing gaps like at the old ski jumps. „The old ski jumps are the only direct connection for cyclists between Hausfeldstrasse and the Seestadt Aspern and are therefore an important cycle route. “I am pleased that by closing the gap we will be able to enable all cyclists to move comfortably in the future and ensure greater safety in cycling and walking,” said district leader Ernst Nevrivy.
14 new trees – 250 square meters of unsealed areas
So far there is only a one-way cycle path between Hausfeldstrasse and Lavenderweg in the direction of Seestadt. From summer 2024, a structurally separate one-way cycle path with a width of up to 2.20 m will also be built on the northern side. This will create an even better connection to Seestadt and a gap between existing cycle facilities on Hausfeldstrasse and Johann -Kutschera Alley closed. 14 trees will also be planted throughout the project area to provide shade and cooling in summer. In addition, existing tree discs and green areas will be expanded. In total, around 250 square meters are unsealed.
Vienna’s big cycle path offensive is bearing fruit: more and more Viennese are cycling in a climate-friendly way all year round. For the sixth time in a row, more cyclists were registered at the city of Vienna’s permanent counting points in 2023. A total of 11.99 million cyclists were counted at 18 measuring points last year. This corresponds to an increase of three percent compared to last year.
