Doctors appeal to politicians: “It’s five to twelve. Act in the interests of the patients.”

Vienna (OTS) The Vienna Medical Association criticizes the SPÖ’s renewed initiative to oblige elective doctors to provide services and threaten them with punitive measures. This is purely symptom treatment instead of getting to the root of the problem: “Elective doctors are systemically important for health care in our country. Forcing them will not solve a single problem and is symbolic politics on the backs of the population. In order to massively reduce waiting times for patients, we finally need to strengthen our solidarity-based health system. We immediately demand that the cash register area be made more attractive and needs-based financing. With an expansion of the health insurance offices, more capacity and therefore quick specialist appointments are available. By modernizing and improving health insurance contracts, these will be able to be filled. This will massively shorten waiting times and benefit patients. It would also be a much more sustainable solution when it comes to financing. With the billion patients that were promised to us years ago and have still not been redeemed, we could take a decisive step and put our health system on track for the future,” says Johannes SteinhartPresident of the Vienna and Austrian Medical Associations.

The Vienna Medical Association criticizes the situation of doctors in the health insurance system: “It’s five to twelve. We doctors are at our limits and despairing of the ever-increasing workload. Making appointments is becoming increasingly difficult, there are long waiting times and, ultimately, admissions are stopped. It is the patients who suffer. You finally have to look at where the problems lie, namely in the cash register system. I appeal to politicians to act in the interests of the population. Every person in Austria must have the right to the best possible medical treatment,” said Naghme Kamaleyan-SchmiedVice President and Chair of the Curia of the resident doctors in the Medical Association for Vienna.
