The New York Court of Appeals has stayed the execution of a $454 million civil fraud judgment against former US President Donald Trump on the condition that he post $175 million in bonds within 10 days.
The ruling, which did not address the merits of the case or indicate how the appeals court will ultimately rule, was issued as the deadline for filing full bonds expired. It was a few hours away.
Otherwise, Trump’s assets were at risk of being seized by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought the case to court.

The process could take a year or more, and if they post bond by the new deadline, James won’t be able to seize their property during that time.
He was unable to get a bond after being turned down by 30 surety companies and faces mounting costs from his other legal woes.
After the decision, Trump said on social media that he would submit smaller bonds before the deadline.

What happens next in the criminal case?
The court set an April 15 trial date, rejecting objections from Trump’s lawyers in the case over payments to a porn star that contained documents about former Trump fixer and key prosecution witness Michael Cohen. The delay was called for because of the late disclosure of
Trump has pleaded not guilty to altering business records related to a $130,000 payment Cohen made to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
The payment was intended to cover up an alleged past sex scandal, which Trump denies.
The decision makes it likely that a decision will be made before the November 5 US election. Republican Trump hopes to defeat Democratic President Joe Biden in the election.
