36-year-old Dimitri Van Den Borre was stabbed to death by his partner (24) in his apartment in Burcht on Monday evening. “After being homeless for several months, he just had an apartment. He was so proud of that, he was on the right track,” the family said.

A drama unfolded on Monday evening in a social apartment in Prins Leopoldstraat in Burcht. 24-year-old LB stabbed her boyfriend Dimitri Van Den Borre to death after a nighttime argument. B. called the emergency services himself, but all help came too late. According to local residents, they seemed like a good couple and had few arguments, except last night.

Two children

In reality, the two had a turbulent past. “They met each other about four years ago in Bruges,” says Yannick Huijbrechts, who is married to Dimitri’s niece. “They were in love and were a couple for two years and they also had two children.” According to the family, things were not always happy between the two and the relationship came to an end. B. went back to live with her parents in Ostend and things went downhill for Dimitri. He lost his way and became homeless.

“After a few months, he suddenly showed up at our door in Burcht asking if we wanted to look after his dog Boyka,” says Yannick. “We were finally able to convince him to seek help from the OCMW to get his life back on track. Last month he was assigned that apartment. He was so proud of that. He was really on the right track.”

Love makes blind

“About two weeks ago, his ex LB suddenly arrived in Burcht and she moved back in with him. We were not in favor of that. I told him ‘leave that in the past, think of yourself’, but they fell in love again. Love is blind, isn’t it?” says Yannick. However, no one expected that things could go so wrong. “They’ve argued before, but we didn’t see this coming. He didn’t deserve this,” he said. “He was a real bon vivant. He did not have much, but what he had was very dear to him and he cherished it.”

LB was arrested at the apartment on Monday evening and she currently remains in jail. An investigating judge was appointed for manslaughter.
