This Friday, the Colombian president republished several messages remembering the former guerrilla leader and asked: “Who murdered him on a day like today? Are those who make peace terrorists or are those who destroy peace?”he said in a message accompanied by a photo of himself as a young man with Pizarro.

The M-19 starred on November 6 and 7, 1985 the violent guerrilla takeover of the Palace of Justice, in the heart of Bogotá, to carry out a political trial of the then Colombian president, Belisario Betancur, one of the most serious episodes of the country’s armed conflict.

On the second day of the takeover, the Army retook the building, which housed the Supreme Court of Justice and the Council of State, with blood and fire, in an operation that left 94 dead, andAmong them 11 judges of the Court, Dozens injured and 11 missing, mostly cafeteria employees and visitors.

After the signing of the peace, in 1990, the M-19 became the political party Democratic Alliance M-19 with which it entered politics, which 32 years later allowed Petro’s arrival to the Presidency.

Criticism of Petro’s attitude did not take long to arrive, such as that of Senator María Fernanda Cabal of the opposition Uribe Democratic Center partywho asked Petro to “respect the country.”

“Here the only ones who feel sympathy for the M-19 are the criminals. This act is an affront against the victims of the Palace of Justice, the more than 500 kidnapped and many tortured and murdered by that groupor,” Cabal wrote on his X account.
