Chairperson Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Hina Jilani issued a written statement on Wednesday in which she called for transparency in the arrest of women associated with PTI and Imran Khan’s lack of facilities in jail. Concern has been expressed.

Hina Jilani raised questions that more than three months have passed since the arrest of PTI women workers, but till now it is not clear how many women are in jail at that time. What is the nature of the charges against them? Where are they imprisoned? In which court they have to be produced? And have challans been issued for their remand or not?

‘This situation is unacceptable. The HRCP also wishes to remind the state that as per section 167 of the Penal Code, women cannot be kept in state custody except for serious offences.

Talking to Independent Urdu, PTI’s Central Information Secretary Rauf Hasan said that HRCP’s statement has also been termed as ‘pure fiction’ and ‘pretence’.

He said on the HRCP’s statement, “When the mountains of state oppression broke down on our workers and leaders, the HRCP remained asleep, women were arrested and locked in jails, the sanctity of the chador chardiwari was violated.” But the Human Rights Commission did not get the idea.

‘Now after many months when our women workers including the party chief and former prime minister are also facing illegal measures, they are only concerned about it? This is all ‘pretence’ and the statement has been issued just to ‘fill the house’.

Spokesman PTI said that the whole world should know how the state machinery is being used against our leaders and workers in fake cases and the worst violations of human rights are going on. Speaking to Independent Urdu, Jail Khana Jat Spokesperson said that ‘Punjab jails provide facilities to female and male prisoners as per the law. The female ward is a completely separate ward which is protected in all respects.

The spokesperson told Independent Urdu that ‘A new washroom has been constructed for Imran Khan in his room on Saturday, in which a western commode and a wash basin have been installed. Bath soap, perfume, air freshener, towel and tissue paper are also available in the washroom. The walls of the washroom have been raised five feet and a new door has been fitted to the bathroom along with all the facilities they are legally allowed to have.’

Number of female prisoners according to court records

According to the court records, the women leaders and workers who were declared involved in the incidents of May 9 attributed to PTI include Alia Hamza, Yasmin Rashid, Tayiba Gul, Khadija Shah, Rubina Jameel, Maryam Mazari, Ayesha Bhatta, Sanam Javed, Sabuhi Imran and others. including those who are currently in jail on judicial remand from the anti-terrorism court.

The hearing on the bail applications of these women is also going on in the Lahore High Court. These women are produced in courts on police appearance.
