Orientation in the Austrian healthcare system is not always easy. But there is support available to ensure that patients receive the best possible treatment.
Health literacy is an important component of successful healthcare. This also means that those affected know their rights and are aware that they can positively influence their treatment process themselves. To do this, they need practical and everyday-relevant information, which is available in a compact and easy-to-understand format, for example in the guide ‘Your rights as a patient’.

Vienna (OTS) – On the occasion of tomorrow’s European “Patient Rights Day”, PHARMIG Secretary General Alexander Herzog draws attention to the rights of patients in the domestic healthcare system: “Health literacy is an important component of successful healthcare. This also means that those affected know their rights and are aware that they can positively influence their treatment process themselves. To do this, they need practical and everyday-relevant information, which is available in a compact and easy-to-understand guide, for example in the guide ‘Your rights as a patient’.”
Together with the online platform selpers, the pharmaceutical associations PHARMIG and FOPI and their member companies developed the guide in 2022 in collaboration with lawyers, patient representatives and communication experts in order to translate legal-technical content into easily understandable and practical information . The structure and content are based on the patient’s journey through the healthcare system, starting with the first doctor’s visits, examinations and diagnoses through therapy to aftercare and possible social benefits. “If patients know their rights, they can better understand and use the services of our healthcare system, the benefits and value of the therapies as well as the rehabilitation and care measures. Health literacy is also a door opener for a healthy life,” concludes Herzog.
