China started its shuttle diplomacy for war resolution

China: China finds itself in trouble for tacitly supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine. As the conflict is dragging on and shows no signs of an immediate end, China has launched its shuttle diplomacy to seek a resolution to the war which has entered its third year. But Ukraine and its Western allies are wary of its true intentions. China has been trying to maintain a balance since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. It has not yet condemned Moscow’s aggression. But the situation is becoming increasingly uncertain as the ongoing war is damaging the global economy and food security as much as it is China’s global interests.

This has prompted Li Hui, the Chinese government’s special representative on Eurasia affairs, to visit Russia, the EU headquarters in Brussels, Poland, Ukraine, Germany and France to demonstrate China’s willingness to end the war. This is the second time within a year that Lee will make such a visit to the region. Lee’s shuttle diplomacy is focused on ending the conflict and paving the way for peace talks to begin. This effort is timely and important, as the crisis has caused global damage and is likely to escalate. The prolonged conflict has already brought many standoffs and challenges for Russia, Ukraine and other countries regarding military, politics, energy and food prices. This crisis has seriously weakened global security which has become a major concern for many countries, especially those in Europe.

China is keen to build consensus on a political solution to the Ukraine crisis. However, despite claims of neutrality, doubts remain among some parties regarding China’s impartiality. Ukraine itself has raised concerns about a potential pro-Russian bias due to China’s “no borders” friendship with Russia. China’s efforts to bridge differences with Europe over its role in the conflict continued to be met with skepticism, with some circles viewing China’s position as being in line with Russia’s interests.
