The Chinese Parliament announced this Tuesday that Wang Yi was named the country’s new Foreign Minister last Friday.
Wang replaces Qin Gang, who was last seen in public in late June.
«The fourth meeting of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress was held […] in Beijing on the 25th [de julio]. After a vote at the meeting, it was decided to remove Qin Gang as foreign minister, and appoint Wang Yi as foreign minister,” reports the Xinhua agency.
The session had a quorum of 169 members of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Parliament.
Wang served as China’s foreign minister for the past decade and in October, he was promoted to the Chinese Communist Party’s politburo. Qin, in turn, previously served as the 11th ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the United States for a period of 17 months.
«Disappearance» by Qin Gang
The topic of the “disappearance” of the Chinese foreign minister began to circulate in the media, after Beijing announced on July 11 that Qin Gang, for health reasons, would not be able to attend the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting, which was held held in Jakarta, and it was precisely Wang Yi who traveled to Indonesia.
Since then, China’s Foreign Ministry has not provided any additional information about the minister’s whereabouts and health status, despite being asked about it repeatedly. With RT
