A child student named Ahsan Habib (6) was killed when two tractors carrying sand from Ichamati river in Dhunat upazila of Bogra were crushed.
The accident took place in front of Guchch village on the bank of Akatia Ichamati river on Dhunat-Jorshimul road on Tuesday (May 7) around 2 pm.
Deceased Ahsan Habib son of Munju Sarkar of Arkatia village of Kalerpara Union. He is a 1st class student of Dhunat Al-Qur’an Academy.
Meanwhile, in protest of the child’s death, the angry crowd burnt four tractors and an excavator machine (excavator) used for lifting and transporting sand. Later, members of Dhunat Fire Service brought the fire under control. The police seized the burnt vehicles.
Locals said that the Water Development Board is working to dig the Ichamati River to restore its navigability. The sandy soil lifted from the river bed during excavation is stored on the river bank. Belal Hossain, a member of Ward No. 9 of Kalerpara Union Parishad, and Raihan Ali, a resident of Sultanhata village, have been selling that land illegally. Excavator machines take the sand from the river bank and sell it to different places by tractor.
Child Ahsan Habib was killed by two tractors on the road while transporting sand and soil from the river bank on Tuesday afternoon. Angry locals vandalized four tractors and an excavator machine and set them on fire. On receiving the information, the police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
After the incident, the two sand traders were absconding, so they could not comment on the matter.
Hamidul Islam, Team Leader of Dhunot Fire Service, told Jago News that the local crowd set fire to some tractors and excavators. The fire of the cars was later brought under control.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhunot Police Station Saikat Hasan said that preparations are underway for the case of the child killed by the tractor. The burnt vehicles have been impounded. The operation is ongoing to arrest those involved in the incident.
