Expansion of production capacities increases supply of biopharmaceuticals

Vienna (OTS) “Novartis’ investments of around 500 million euros in the construction of two new cell culture plants in Austria by 2025 will help to expand the production capacities of and the supply of biopharmaceuticals from our country,” says Sylvia Hofinger, Managing Director of the Chemical Industry Association (FCIO) in the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKÖ). And further: “In addition, 350 new jobs will be created in Kundl and Schaftenau in Tyrol. This means that Kundl, Tyrol and Austria remain leading biotech locations in Europe.”

Biopharmaceuticals are highly innovative and elaborately manufactured medications that open up new treatment options for a variety of diseases. They are used where classic medications and therapies reach their limits.

“The red-white-red life science sector includes around 1,000 companies from the areas of biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry and medical technology. With a turnover of more than 25 billion euros and more than 60,000 employees, it is an important key industrial sector in Austria,” emphasizes Hofinger.

“Investments like those made by Novartis are forward-looking, especially in these particularly challenging times. Only with successful research and production locations can Europe survive in international competition and become more independent of global supply chains,” said the managing director of the FCIO. At the same time, the investment is also exemplary in terms of sustainability: the new production technology enables 40 percent savings in thermal energy and electricity consumption falls by 25 percent. It shows once again: the right framework conditions for a strong domestic pharmaceutical industry bring a win-win-win solution for more health, environmental protection and prosperity.
