Director of the Statistics and Research Center at the Central Bank of Libya, Ali Al-Mabrouk, said that the counterfeit currency of 50 dinars is widespread in the markets and has caused pressure and great demand for foreign currency.

In a statement to Al-Ahrar, Al-Mabrouk denied the Central Bank’s intention to withdraw the 50 dinar note at the present time, stressing the need for coordination and cooperation between the country’s economic policies to address the financial crisis.

Al-Mabrouk attributed the decline in the exchange rate of the Libyan dinar to the measures that were followed in the past and the closure of oil, considering that the country’s financial situation is not catastrophic, but it amounts to sounding the alarm bell, as he put it.

Regarding the banking credit system, Al-Mabrouk confirmed to Al-Ahrar that the system is operating normally and that the number of those registered in the personal individuals system has so far reached 670,000, denying that it is closed to customer requests.

Al-Mabrouk revealed that the citizens who have completed the procedures for charging the individuals’ personal cards have exceeded 100,000 citizens, according to the Central Bank’s data.

The Central Bank had revealed in a previous statement that there were three issues of the 50-dinar denomination circulating in the markets, two of which belong to the Tripoli and Benghazi centers, while the third described it as an unknown issue, and said that it was considering making a decision to withdraw all of them.

The bank also indicated that this category will be accepted and deposited in accordance with controls and procedures related to money laundering and terrorist financing crimes, especially those received after the withdrawal decision is issued, stressing its keenness to take into account all the reasons for achieving financial stability for the state, according to the bank.
