Can West Nile Virus Be Transmitted from Humans?

JAKARTA – West Nile virus is a real threat to Israelis today. The disease has infected at least 100 Israelis.

Most of the patients infected with West Nile virus are those residing in central Israel, some of whom are from the Sharon region, and they are being treated at the Meir Medical Center in Kafr Saba.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the virus has caused many patients to be treated in intensive care units (ICUs), requiring ventilators and special drugs to help them survive.

West Nile virus is known to originate from mosquitoes, which then spread to humans through mosquito bites. Many animals are also infected with this virus, including birds.

The question now is, can the West Nile virus spread between humans?

As explained in the Jerusalem Post report, the West Nile virus is currently confirmed as not being able to spread between humans.

“This disease is not transmitted between humans,” the report explained, quoted Tuesday (2/7/2024).

However, humans are still warned to be vigilant, especially if they show symptoms such as fever, headache, weakness, joint and muscle pain, conjunctivitis or red eyes, rash, and nausea and vomiting.

It is highly recommended to immediately see a doctor if the fever persists for more than a week.

“In addition to fever for more than a week, it is advisable to see a doctor immediately if vomiting occurs when trying to drink, not urinating for 10 hours, rapid breathing, and decreased consciousness,” the report said again.

“In fact, see a doctor immediately if you are sensitive to light and have headaches that are unusually intense or that make you wake up easily at night,” he added.
