The ruling Conservative Party has been resoundingly defeated in UK local government elections. The results of 102 out of 107 councils were declared on Saturday (April 4). It can be seen that the Conservative Party has lost 450 seats compared to the previous time. Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported this news.

On Thursday, about 2,600 councilors voted in 107 local government councils in England and Wales. Besides, by-elections for 1 parliamentary seat were also held. It shows that the opposition Labor Party got 170 more seats.

The results showed that Labor leader Kier Starmer’s Labor Party won 1,611 councillors. The Liberal Democratic Party is in the second position after winning 508 councilor posts. The ruling Conservative Party is in the third position with 504 councillors. Sadiq Khan is going to win the mayoral election of London for the third consecutive time.

The Conservative Party has never faced such a disastrous local government election in its 40-year history. The third-placed Liberal Democratic Party overtook the Conservative Party to take second place.

As a result, analysts believe that Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party may have to withdraw from power in the upcoming general elections.

Expressing joy at the results, Labor Party leader Kier Starmer addressed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to call for an early national election. Sunak has to call the general election by January 28 next year.
