US President Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of his “ironclad” commitment to Israel’s security in a telephone conversation today, the White House officially announced.
Biden has stressed the need for a sustained increase in humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip, where Israeli forces are fighting the radical Palestinian group Hamas. The flow of aid must be carried out in full coordination with humanitarian organizations, was the opinion of the American head of state.
Biden and Netanyahu also discussed Israel’s possible military operation in the southern city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, on the border with Egypt, and the US president confirmed his position on this matter.
Reuters recalls that Biden wants to protect the civilian Palestinian population in Rafah, where about one million Palestinians have sought refuge in the course of the conflict, after being displaced from other places in the enclave by Israel’s military actions.
The agency notes that this is the first conversation between Biden and Netanyahu since the two heard each other after the massive Iranian attack on Israel on the night of April 14 with over three hundred drones and missiles.
