Vida union: Employers’ unwillingness to pay for inflation – Works council conference specifies timetable for industrial action on Monday
Vienna (OTS) – In the collective bargaining negotiations for the bicycle messengers, today’s third round of negotiations did not produce an offer that was satisfactory from the union’s perspective and would at least have compensated for the rolling inflation of 8.7 percent demanded by the vida union. “It is incomprehensible that employees who cycle half the globe in all weathers, cycling an average of 15,000 kilometers per year, should not even be compensated for the full price increase. In addition, the monthly wage in this industry is 1,730 euros gross for a 40-hour week, which is roughly the same as the current poverty line. This currently amounts to almost 1,400 euros in Austria,” says Markus Petritsch, chairman of vida’s road department, indignantly.
“Our colleagues have been wondering for a long time how they are going to pay their current bills for energy, housing and food after two years of extreme inflation,” adds Toni Pravdic, KV negotiator for the vida union. The 5.8 percent offered by employers today is simply not enough.
A labor dispute is getting closer and closer among the bicycle delivery companies: “We will of course remain ready to negotiate if there is an unexpected new and fair offer from the employer,” says Pravdic. In any case, next Monday the further steps towards industrial action will be concretized at a works council conference as a precautionary measure. “At the numerous company meetings in the past few weeks, it was clear that the mood among the employees was already boiling over. At the meetings, our colleagues overwhelmingly declared their willingness to take industrial action,” concluded Pravdic.
