The president of the Association of Greek Textile Manufacturers, Eleftherios Kourtalis, rang a bell yesterday with his letter to the Minister of Labor explaining the problems the sector is facing after the increase in the minimum wage and asking for support measures. As he stated, “the Greek Textile Industry is an important labor-intensive and energy-intensive industry” with exports of 70% of its production, mainly to the EU. The latest increase in the minimum wage creates additional problems for the competitiveness of the industry, as Portugal and Spain, the two Greece’s main competitors in Europe have a lower basic salary. They are asking for the support of the sector with a reduction in employer contributions and electricity subsidy.
