SPÖ-Arpa: Combating child poverty and ensuring participation must be a common goal across party lines – Carinthia can become a model region for basic child welfare
Klagenfurt (OTS) – SPÖ Federal Councilor Claudia Arpa reacts with great interest to the announcement by Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch that a model for basic child welfare will be developed. “Even if the minister assumes that implementation is currently not possible with the ÖVP as a coalition partner in the federal government, it is important and right that concrete measures are developed now, because fighting poverty will have to be the top goal of the next federal government,” said Arpa . The current instruments are no longer suitable for this. “In particular, the abolition of the needs-based minimum income in favor of social assistance that no longer even covers people’s basic needs was a big mistake.” In addition, the federal government’s failure to combat inflation – the inflation rate in Austria is currently almost twice as high as in the euro area – has massively increased the risk of poverty in Austria.
Combating child poverty must become a common goal across party lines. “Carinthia offers itself as a pilot region for basic child welfare. The minimum security was also first implemented and tested in Carinthia in the mid-2000s before it was rolled out very successfully throughout Austria,” emphasizes Arpa. Carinthia could once again take on this pioneering role. “Poverty affects children throughout their lives, affecting their school success and their future careers. Every euro that is used to combat child poverty not only increases the opportunities of young people, but is also an investment in social cohesion, social peace and the good economic development of the country,” explains Arpa.
Fighting poverty is also one of the central goals of the European Union, emphasizes the Carinthian SPÖ top candidates for the EU elections: “Our task must be to make this Europe fit for the future, to secure peace, to maintain prosperity – and a piece of Europe to continue to make it more social and fair, especially for children and women.”
