Vienna (OTS) Manufacture, use, dispose of, burn: every year in Austria, more than a million used mattresses end up in the trash and are then thermally recycled. This will be round 150,000 tons of CO2 released and valuable raw materials destroyed (results report “Circular Mattresses”). In order to find a more sensible way to deal with old mattresses and pave the way to circular mattresses, the foam specialist NEVEON, the successful start-up MATR and Betten Eberharter initiated the founding of the Austrian Mattress Alliance and commissioned the Climate Lab to implement it.

A functioning circular economy offers enormous economic, ecological and social improvement potential. However, in order to implement it, committed cooperation between a wide range of actors is required.“, is Helene PattermannInnovation Lead for Circularity in the Climate Lab convinces and invites other companies along the mattress value chain to sign the expression of interest.

The alliance will focus on developing a common understanding of circular designclear criteria for the digital product passport as well as the targeted development of a voluntary one Placing fee on the market (EPR – extended producer responsibility).

Around 80% of the environmental impact of products is already determined in the design phase. It is therefore essential to start right there and bring long-lasting, reusable, repairable and recyclable products to the market.“, explains MATR founder Verena Judmayer. “For greater circularity, we need the “digital product passport”, which provides us with information such as material composition, reusability, origin and time stamp of production in the form of a simple QR code.“, added Roman Eberharter by Betten Eberharter.

A marketing fee is already an established means of financing the closed mattress cycle in other countries. It is time for us to take the appropriate steps in Austria too“, describes Michael Bednarek from NEVEON is the third goal of the alliance.

Other companies and institutions are invited to join by the end of March. Inquiries can be sent to helene.pattermann@climatelab.at.
