A rocket attack was launched from Iraq targeting the US base in Syria. Citing two Iraqi security sources, Reuters news agency reported that at least five rockets were fired from the Iraqi city of Jumma targeting a US military base in northeastern Syria.

Sunday was the first attack on a US base in the region since Iran-backed groups killed three US soldiers in Jordan in early February.

Describing the latest attack, Iraqi security sources and a top military official told Reuters that a small truck with a rocket launcher was parked in the Syrian border town of Jummar.

The military official said, at that time, the warplane was in the sky. At the same time, the truck caught fire due to the rocket explosion. They said, “We cannot say without investigating whether the bomb was dropped on the truck by the US warplanes.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia Al Sudani has returned home after completing his visit to the United States just a day ago. The attack happened a day after he entered the country. The Iraqi Prime Minister met with US President Joe Biden at the White House during his visit to the United States.

Meanwhile, an official, who did not want to be named, admitted that Iraq attacked a coalition base in Rumalin, Syria. However, he said no US military personnel were injured in the attack.

The official described the attack as a ‘failed rocket attack’. But it was not immediately clear whether the rockets failed to hit the base or were destroyed before reaching it. It is not clear whether the base was targeted or not.

In recent times, there has been a lot of tension in the region due to counter-attacks by Iran and Israel. Recently, Israel attacked Tehran as a response to Iran’s attack. However, Israel’s strikes have been relatively small-scale compared to Iran’s, and few drone strikes have been attempted.

US officials claim that Israel launched a missile attack on Iran. However, Iran says it has repelled a few drone attacks. Rejecting the missile attack on Iran, an official of the country said that the US media reports are not true.

Israel has counter-attacked in response to Iran’s attack. Last Saturday, Iran launched a drone and missile attack on Israeli territory. Tel Aviv had already made it clear that Tehran’s attack would be retaliated against. Throughout the week, Israel’s Western allies, particularly the United States and Britain, had been urging the country’s government not to launch a major counterattack in response to the Iranian attack.

However, Iran’s attack has caused quite a stir. Because Tehran has carried out such an attack on the territory of Israel for the first time. But that too was actually a revenge. On April 1, Israel launched an airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria.
