US President Joe Biden said a ground operation in the Gaza Strip city of Rafah would be a big mistake. Joe Biden spoke on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (March 18). White House security official Jack Sullivan confirmed the matter. Qatar-based media Al-Jazeera reported this news.
President Joe Biden explained why he is so deeply concerned about the prospect of a large-scale Israeli military operation in the town of Rafah, US National Security Adviser Sullivan said at a news conference.
Sullivan said conducting a large-scale ground operation there would be a mistake, causing more innocent civilian deaths. It will worsen the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, deepen the anarchy and further isolate Israel internationally.
In the phone call, Biden also asked Netanyahu to send a senior team of military, intelligence and aid officials to Washington. Netanyahu has agreed to send a high-level delegation to Washington to hear US concerns about Israel’s current Rafah plan in Gaza – and to discuss an alternative approach to operations targeting Hamas.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the attack on Rafah, a safe haven in the besieged Gaza Strip. At least 300,000 people have taken new shelter in Rafah city.
