News from Angola – The Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, confirmed this Tuesday, in the city of Moçâmedes, Namibe province, that the country will host the 31st edition of the African senior men’s championship, Afrobasket, in 2025.

Within the scope of the closed motorsport and motorcycle circuit, as part of the Festas do Mar/2024, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, confirmed that Angola will indeed host Afrobasket next year.

Namibe, Benguela and Huíla are on the list of cities that could serve as a stage for the continental race, in addition to Luanda.

The official stated that the province of Namibe has experience in organizing sporting events and proved this when it hosted the Roller Hockey World Championship in 2013.

After this confirmation, the national sports governing body said that within a week the Ministry will join the federation to begin preparations for the event.

Of the various activities, the highlights are the national chess championship matches, in the male and female youth category, honored by the Minister, in the school complex named after him, in the Amélia beach area.

Next, he also assessed the current state of the Welwitschia Mirabilis multipurpose pavilion. The sports venue could host one of the phases of the men’s senior Afrobasket that Angola will organize.

Rui Falcão took advantage of his presence in the desert land and met with representatives of youth organizations and sports associations.

The motto of the candidacy, in addition to the redemption of the continental title, also fits into the festivities of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, to be celebrated on November 11th.

This is the fourth time that Angola will host an edition of the men’s senior Afrobasket, 35 years after the first experience (1989).

In 2007, for the third time, the race took place in more than one city in addition to Luanda, Cabinda, Benguela, Huambo and Huíla.

The national senior men’s basketball team boasts 11 African titles, the first being won in 1989, in Luanda, with coach Victorino Cunha, and the last in 2013, in Côte d’Ivoire, under the guidance of coach Paulo Macedo.
