At the request of former Latin American presidents, Andrés Chadwick, former Minister of the Interior and cousin of Sebastián Piñera, will be the country’s new representative in the Freedom and Democracy Group, replacing the deceased former president.
The platform made up of center-right and right-wing leaders includes prominent figures such as José María Aznar and Mariano Rajoy of Spain, as well as former leaders of the region such as Mario Abdo, Vicente Fox and Andrés Pastrana, among others.
The void in the leadership of this platform arose after the tragic helicopter accident that claimed the life of Piñera, who was one of the main promoters of the initiative. In an effort to maintain his legacy in international affairs, it was decided that Chadwick would take his place.
Andrés Chadwick Piñera will join the activities and public statements of the Freedom and Democracy Group, which mainly questions left-wing governments such as Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, considering them dictatorships.
Chadwick’s name was proposed after the need for a Chilean signature on a letter addressed to the President of the United States, Joe Biden, regarding the situation in Venezuela and the disqualification of María Corina Machado to compete in the presidential elections against Nicolás Maduro.

In addition to his role in the Freedom and Democracy Group, Chadwick will be the political coordinator representing the Piñera family in all matters related to the former head of state. Although he will remain dean of Law at San Sebastián University, Chadwick is expected to form a political team to assist him in his new responsibilities. Furthermore, the proximity of the end of the disqualification that he faced due to the constitutional accusation during the social outbreak of 2019 could give him greater freedom to address the political contingency.
