April 18, 2024, is the International Day of Monuments and Sites, which is celebrated by various relevant international institutions around the world as part of a global effort aimed at shedding light on the great value of tangible cultural heritage and its role in sustainable development and the advancement of societies.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated April 18 as World Monuments and Sites Day during the organization’s General Conference in 1982, while the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) is making efforts to promote the day and encourage its celebration, as the day this year bears the slogan “Disasters and conflicts through the lens of the Venice Charter.”

On this occasion, His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, said: “On World Monuments and Sites Day, we emphasize the achievements of the Kingdom of Bahrain in the field of cultural heritage preservation, as its efforts are not limited to protecting and preserving its national heritage only. Rather, it extends to strengthening regional cooperation by hosting the Arab Regional Center for World Heritage in Manama, which works side by side with all Arab countries and supports them to protect their cultural heritage.”

His Excellency added: “We also praise the constructive role of the Venice Charter in promoting joint international action to preserve our human heritage. This Charter is an approach that we benefit from in developing new innovative solutions to confront challenges and invest in opportunities. This reflects our vision and determination in the Culture Authority to keep pace with all scientific and technical developments in the field.” Archaeological preservation and preservation.

His Excellency noted that, within its strategy in the coming years, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities is paying greater attention to archaeological restoration and preservation projects in various sites in the Kingdom of Bahrain, including its three sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and many other historical sites and buildings, pointing out the necessity of preserving its important status. What the Kingdom has achieved and achieved by preserving the history of the civilizations that succeeded it on its land, from the Dilmun civilization to the modern era.

The Venice Charter was issued by the Second International Conference of Architects and Technicians in Historical Monuments, which was held in the city of Venice in May 1964. It is considered one of the most important international charters in the field of restoration and maintenance of monuments, and this year the 60th anniversary of its approval will be celebrated. The Charter is also an important framework for addressing the most prominent new challenges facing cultural heritage, the most important of which is climate change.
