In a step that may bring views closer to ending the Palestinian division, Hamas leader Musa Abu Marzouk confirmed today, Saturday, that the movement does not see irreconcilable gaps with the factions regarding forming a unified government.
“Break the estrangement”
On the other hand, Fatah movement leader Munir Al-Jaghoub, in statements to Al-Arabiya, considered that the Moscow talks would break the rift and melt the ice between the factions.
A member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Ahmed Al-Majdalani, told Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath yesterday, Friday, that the organization represents all Palestinians, including Hamas.
“The legitimate representative of the Palestinians”
This came after Hamas said earlier today, shortly after their meeting in Moscow, that the Palestinian factions meeting in the Russian capital confirmed that the PLO is “the legitimate representative of the Palestinians.”
The movement stressed in a statement that “the positive, constructive spirit prevailed at the meeting, noting that it agreed that its meetings will continue in upcoming rounds of dialogue to reach a comprehensive national unity that includes all Palestinian forces and factions within the framework of the Palestine Liberation Organization, the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.”
Resignation of the Shtayyeh government
Early last week, Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh submitted the resignation of his government to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, while expectations indicate that the authority is moving to assign Muhammad Mustafa to form the next government due to his history of economic work, as he was a former Minister of Economy in previous governments.
Recommendations for the Moscow Conference
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had announced a few days ago, in statements that took the nature of recommendations to the Moscow conference, on the necessity of adhering to the political program of the PLO and ending the Palestinian division left behind by the events of 2007.
He also pointed out the necessity of adhering to the principle of one authority, law, and legitimate weapon, in addition to peaceful popular resistance.
