Al-Ahly Benghazi won the Libyan Basketball Super Cup for the 2022/2023 sports season after defeating Al-Ittihad with a score of 57-55 on Thursday evening.
The match was held at the Suleiman Al-Darrat Complex in the city of Benghazi, in the presence of a large crowd of fans of both teams.
Al-Ahly Benghazi team entered the match as champion of the Libyan Basketball League, while Al-Ittihad entered it as champion of the Libya Cup for the 2022-2023 sports season.
This is the third time that Al-Ahly Benghazi has won the Super Cup in its history, equaling Al-Nasr’s record, according to the Libyan Basketball Federation. It is also the second time in a row that he has lifted the Basketball Super Cup.
With its loss today, Al-Ittihad, which holds the record for the number of league and cup wins, failed to win its first Super Cup title for the first time in its history.
The champion team was led by Serbian coach Ivan Grimc, while the Al-Ittihad team was led by Egyptian coach Omar El-Sabkhi. The two teams relied on local players and one professional player each.
Al-Ittihad dominated the course of play in the first half of the Super Cup, ending the confrontation with a score of 34-28, but its rival eventually succeeded in achieving the title in front of its large fans.
This is the eleventh time in the history of Libya that the Basketball Super Cup tournament has been held.
